Excessive Sweating in Women
In this a blog post I just wanted to discuss the differences between excessive sweating in men and excessive sweating in women and indeed if there are any differences and if there are what they are. What things in particular do women suffer that men do not when it comes to excessive sweating.
Everybody knows that a little bit of sweat is normal on a hot day but when you sweat everyday or at times when it would be deemed not normal to be sweating then there may be a problem.
So we sweat, men and women, when we get hot. Whether that be through hot weather, exercise or stress and anxiety. The brain will send an overheat message to the nerves and on to over 2 million sweat glands that are found under the skin. There are two types of sweat glands. eccrine, the glands that regulate body temperature and apocrine which release pheromones. Sweat will secrete through the skin and then evaporate which cools the skin.
So what is sweat, well basically its made up of water and salt electrolytes. The release of sweat can actually cleanse the and moisturize the skin and get rid of toxins. By itself sweat has no smell, its when it comes in to contact with certain bacteria found on the skin that a smell becomes apparent.
One of the main reasons excessive sweating in women is deemed worse than in a man is its social acceptability. The perception is It is more socially acceptable for men to sweat. Although if you ask men that suffer from excessive sweating they may not see it the same way. But nobody expects to see a lady sweat, and this is the reason women are often very embarrassed to be sweating, or show signs of sweating, especially if its uncontrollable or excessive. The fact of the matter is women do suffer from excessive sweating and sometimes more aggressively than men.
So what causes excessive sweating in women. Well a lot of the reasons can be the same as for men but there are some other reasons to be aware of. Excessive sweating in women can be a sign of early pregnancy. Hormonal changes occur rapidly in pregnancy and that be enough to cause excessive sweating. If you think that could be a reason seek a medical test with your doctor.
Another reason for excessive sweating in women could be due to the onset of the menopause. Hot flashes sometimes confused with excessive sweating could be a sign of the nearing the end of reproductive years. The disruption of the usual function of the vascular motor system causing intense heat and perspiration. Again you will know if this could be a possibility or whether to rule it out straight away.
So what could be the other causes. Well excessive sweating could be a sign of another underlying disease or a thyroid problem. The thyroid is located in the neck and produces hormones in response to signals in the brain. A simple blood test can be arranged by your doctor to check your thyroid function. Sweating can also be an early sign of heart disease especially if associated with shortness of breath, chest pain or a sudden or unexplained lack of energy. I’m not trying to scare you here but excessive sweating can be sign of something more serious and some things really need to be checked out.
Things to ask yourself. Are you frequently stressed, are you taking prescription drugs, or recreational drugs. Do you drink lots of caffeine and or alcohol. Are you looking after your body. Do you exercise and take regular high quality women’s nutritional supplement as well as a good diet of fresh fruit and vegetables.
These are all things that can easily be answered in the quest to find out why you may be sweating. Nobody is saying you need to be a saint but you really need to look after your body to help control sweating. Try to limit caffeine and alcohol as far as possible and drink plenty of fresh water. Eat a well balanced diet containing as much fresh vegetables and fruit as you can. Avoid processed foods and refined sugars. These things are a good platform to build upon. I think there is little point in spending a lot of money on expensive sweating treatments if you have been neglecting the basics.
So what can women do to help with their excessive sweating. Well the options open are the same as for men and it starts with a good deodorant or antiperspirant. Deodorants are scented and can be used to mask smell where as antiperspirants work by blocking the release of sweat from the sweat glands. Deodorants and antiperspirants can be brought over the counter or stronger strength prescription types can obtained from a doctor. These clinical strength varieties have aluminum chloride as an active ingredient. You must be careful of the levels as it has been known to cause skin irritation and itching.
Botox injections are another solution to excess sweat. This is consider a mildly invasive treatment but careful thought should be taken. Botox will temporarily stop sweating from the area that receives the injection. They can last up to six months, but you will need to undertake regular sessions to build up levels and to maintain the sweat free look
The most invasive treatment is full blown surgery to remove sweat glands in the area affected by the sweating. This should not be taken lightly.
